The most important factor is the ecosystem already adopted by the company. For example, if you are a Microsoft 365 user already, you might need Microsoft SharePoint licenses to develop a corporate portal. In that case licensing costs might be reduced. Regarding the platforms we use, there is a scenario for every one of them:
The intranet has historically been the point of access to all information systems of the company. Due to the technological progress, the integration has become even tighter and turned out to be mandatory for business processes that have to be included to a corporate portal. Intranets are usually integrated with corporate systems supporting core business (ERP, EDMS, BPM) and specific solutions for employees’ interaction (video conferencing systems, CRM).
In most cases it depends on the business goals set for the portal upgrade project. We propose to start with auditing the current web application as an independent project to make a more objective decision. To audit portals, we use frequently used techniques and our own method, which allows us to quickly assess main advantages and disadvantages of a portal for different user groups.
